Kettlebell Safety

When training with kettlebells, keep safety in the forefront. Be sure to choose an appropriate weight for your level of experience, and keep the weight low and the reps low when starting out or increasing weight. Start with basic exercises like the swing or clean and then advance to extended exercises that combine two or more basic exercises into one continuous rep.

When not used properly, kettlebells may cause serious injury, so please observe these precautions when using them.

  • Perform kettlebell exercises in an open area that’s free of clutter.
  • Be sure those around you stand clear of your range of motion.
  • If you lose control of the kettlebell during an exercise and it starts to fall, get out of the way. Do not attempt to regain control and risk injury.
  • Handle all kettlebells carefully, regardless of weight.
  • Avoid training on surfaces that could be damaged from a dropped kettlebell.
